Sisters and Friends

Recently three of my siblings and niece came to visit. It was great to see them all again. As a young person I always had one or two friends never a slew of friends I did things with. The same goes for now. The amazing thing to me is how similar the relationship is with sisters and best friends. They know you inside and out, accept you for who you are,and don't judge you no matter what they think about your decisions. (No matter how wrong they think you are :)). I love the relationships I have with my friends and sisters. This little post is just to celebrate how good you guys make me feel, how much I appreciate your support and love. If it was not nine am I would be raising a glass of wine to toast you, but coffee will have to do. I love you all.

Sisters don't need words. They have perfected a language of snarls and smiles and frowns and winks - expressions of shocked surprise and incredulity and disbelief. Sniffs and snorts and gasps and sighs - that can undermine any tale you're telling.

Oxymoron the intuitive man...A lesson in communication

The intuitive man. Most women I think would consider this an oxymoron. Through out my life it has been a struggle to communicate my needs in romantic relationships. Currently I am in a relationship with a man who is a great communicator and has taught me much in that realm. Probably too much for his liking now a days. :)~

Of course it is not my ideal relationship as it is not a truly romantic one on his part at least. For me it still registers as one emotionally. Our relationship was based in friendship and intimacy has grown from there. I do envy people who have it all in their relationships. What's my purpose in saying that, to show that in a romantic relationship often emotions get in the way of true communication.

So on to the lesson ladies, when I say ladies I mean all of you from 14 to 94. It is never to young to start practicing being a strong woman and partner and it is certainly never to late.

What I have learned is that as we all know women and men see things differently. "Oh no kidding you say!" But they also communicate differently and don't often intuit from our words, actions or silence. We as women from child rearing I think become intuitive to others needs and therefore can often know what our partner needs before they do. We pay attention to to the small cues they give us so we know when they are angry, sad, frustrated etc. and we usually act on those cues trying to support and give them what they need. However we get frustrated or our feelings get hurt when they don't intuit back what we need. Often it feels like they are being selfish, ignoring us or plain just don't care. We then become angry, upset, frustrated and I think the worst feeling is resentment. Resentment can eat at you and your relationship. So the question is how to resolve this?

Men communicate clearly. They don't hide their cookies so to speak, unless they are liars. So when communicating with them, the silent treatment may get their attention but they don't know why you are being so quiet. Most times even if you have said, " I get quiet when........." pick one, you have hurt my feelings, you made me angry, or I am just in a pissy mood. (excuse the language.) Well we expect that once we have stated when I act this way it means this that they will remember. Not so. Men see us as emotional beings and we are a mystery to them. So unless you communicate clearly they usually won't get it.

So instead of the silent treatment, take a deep breath and say what it is that is on your mind. You would be amazed how well this works. Here are some examples.

I need some help with the house work, I am tired of coming home from work and having to pick up the house.

What you said about..........hurt my feelings.

I need some me time, can you take the kids so I can have a day for me.

I need us to have some private time together without the kids. Just you and me, I miss that.
It is important to say these kinds of things as a matter of fact. Don't be accusing and don't wine. Just state it as plain as you can. I used to think psychology was a bunch of nonsense but have since come to realize that a lot of it is based in truth. For example, when your mate says something that hurts your feelings a psychologist would ask, "So how does that make you feel?"The key to this is that you need to look at your feelings and figure out why it makes you feel a certain way. Often the reason is nothing to do with what is said by the other person. It comes from deeper within us and we have to find out why when someone says this or that why we feel this way or that about it. I am big on examples so here is another one. I was made fun of in school for my big ears so I am sensitive about them. My partner often grabs my ears, or calls me monkey. He does this in a loving manner, not to hurt my feelings. Where I was going with the psychology part was also that if you start your statements with "I", it is about you not them. So you are not putting them on the defensive. When someone starts a statement with, "You" it is like blaming. It's not what you say it's the way that you say it.

So ladies, learn to communicate clearly it will make your life much easier and your emotions won't be in a tizzy as my friend says. The guys will appreciate the clear communication and will respond to it. If they don't then you might be justified in your feelings.

PS: Being fair to the men some oxymoron's do exist. Thank you from all of us women for being one.

Some day my prince will come~

Dare We...........

My friend is a photographer and he asked the question....Dare We women over forty have photos taken of us? Not just your ordinary photos mind you but photos that show the world that we are women in every sense of the word. Beautiful, smart, classy, and yes Sexy.
He speaks to the body image issues as I have and it is true. Does not matter if your twenty or forty most of us have body image issues. I challenge you all to take a look at yourselves again and find that woman you know your are and show her off to the world. Yes we are mamas, sisters, daughters and friends. We should not lose our own identity in being all these things. It is important to keep a balance in our lives. To be the best of all those things we need to keep an internal focus and not lose the woman who we are inside.
Here is a video from my friend who loves to photograph women of all ages. He finds that something special in you and brings out the beauty not only inside but out for all the world to see.......You as a Woman! I have shot with him many times and always love the photos he takes of me. A photo shoot with him is fun, silly and when you see the photos you go, Wow is that me? And though these photos might have been only to share with your husband and most private friends I have known many of his customers who can't wait to show them to the world. So take a look at the video and visit his page. www.classyshot.com I am sure you will find he is a talented photographer and who knows you might want to show the world the woman you are.

Something Positive: Wisdom

Wisdom,

Finally something positive that comes with aging! Wisdom, I do enjoy that part. Here are some of the more important things I have learned please add yours.

1.There is a difference between friends and acquaintances.
2.I deserve to be loved and treated well.
3.Life is to be lived in the moment, the next minute is not promised to us so why worry about that if we live in the moment each one is special.( I forget this sometimes)

4.I'm allowed to have feelings no matter what they are and it is ok to share them as long as I don't place blame on someone else for how I feel.
5.A good long walk in the woods helps many things.
6.Don't believe the advice forums on relationships~honesty is the best policy, most sites want to tell you how to manipulate your partner.
7.Misery loves company~ if people are miserable they want you to be right there with them.
8.People can say anything they want to me, it is my choice how I react to what they say.
9.Just because someone said it does not make it true.
10.If you would be embarrassed about something you are going to do, maybe you shouldn't do it.
11.Relationships should be nurturing, each individual should be allowed to grow and change.
12. Sometimes apart is better than together.
13.Being alone does not mean being lonely.
14. The hardest thing to do is look at oneself in the mirror and ask all those questions you ask everyone else.
15.There is one person you can count on not to lie to you. Look in the mirror.
16.The truth hurts sometimes but at least you can figure out what to do with that.
17. Educated does not always mean smart.
18. Body Mind Spirit~They all work together
19. Be careful what you ask for you might get it.
20. No one else can make you happy or feel good only you can do that.

These are some of mine~waiting on yours.

Menopause

Yes! It is natural it is apart of aging not a disease Women have been experiencing it since the dawn of time I am sure. The Mayo Clinic defines it well......

"Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and fertility, defined as occurring 12 months after your last menstrual period.
Menopause is a natural biological process, not a medical illness. Even so, the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause can disrupt your sleep, sap your energy and — at least indirectly — trigger feelings of sadness and loss.
Hormonal changes cause the physical symptoms of menopause, but mistaken beliefs about the menopausal transition are partly to blame for the emotional ones." The full statement can be found at
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/menopause/DS00119

Hormonal changes they say, aah yes.......more like a hormonal roller coaster. I am Peri-menopausal and some days wonder if I am losing my mind. Insomnia, occasional night hot flashes, those are tolerable. It is the emotional roller that drives me nuts. As my friend says she gets in a "tizzy." That is exactly what it feels like an internal "tizzy." So how do we combat the emotional issues of menopause. Recognizing what is occurring has helped me, only in the fact that I have learned to hold my tongue so to speak. Often I found my self in such a state that I would feel these emotions building until they were released as tears or anger. Then I would be left standing there thinking, "What was that about?" It was not about anything for the most part but hormones. Little things that normally did not bother me were becoming emotional hurricanes. Once I recognized this I was able to say, "hey self, you know what this is, chill out." Self has listened for the most part and behaves.

Of course there are the western medicine options of HTR, which I opt out of. Too many negative side effects for me. Apparently the people who are smarter than me have not figured it out yet so I will keep to toughing it out. A few natural things that are supposed to help are black cohosh, saw palmetto, and soy. All not proven or controversial. Black Cohosh has helped me. Also they say women who are the correct weight and exercise have an easier time of it. So maybe I will survive this after all. I find sex helps to relieve the emotional side effects also. Probably a way to release all those excess hormones running around where they don't belong. Or maybe stimulating a hormone that is lacking. Who knows one of life's little mysteries, but it works for me so that's all I have to say about that.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts~

Body Image

We all know as we age our bodies change significantly. Whether we gain or lose in our forties we fight the loss of elasticity and tone that takes place as collagen decreases. As they say gravity works! Add on peri-menopause and decreased metabolism, loss of estrogen, whoo hoo, makes for a great time. :)

Being bombarded with images of what is beautiful, sexy and youthful can often overwhelm us. If we compare ourselves with the twenty somethings we will always measure up short. Some things you can't get back, youth is one of them. I have my daily battles but overall I feel pretty good about the way I look. There are days when my partner who is a photographer is shooting a young beautiful woman I often look in the mirror and say, "Geeeeeeeeez" . And I might feel down for a little while about aging and my body image. But when I really think about my life would I want to be twenty again? Hell yeah! Oh but only if I could take all this wisdom back with me. Just for laughs: A much younger classmate said to me while giving a massage, you don't have any fat up here (speaking of my buttucks) its all down here. I said, "Yup honey gravity works, take care of it now if you want it to look good later."

To me body image is a very important part of who we are. How we view ourselves can have an impact on our general outlook on life. If we feel attractive then we are more apt to be attractive to others. About 3 years ago I lost a bunch of weight, felt great and had a great partner who made me feel attractive. So my personality exuded friendliness, happiness and yes sexuality. It was very eye opening to me to see how people reacted to the change in my personality. Kind of like the old adage, " I think, therefore I am."

Here is my way of combating poor body image:
Start by telling yourself something positive about your appearance every day while looking in the mirror.
If you are feeling really down, put on a dress, do your make up, go out and do something.
Getting my hair done is another sure way to make me feel better about my appearance.

I like who I am, the person I have become from my life experiences and look forward to growing even more. I like to share what wisdom I've gleaned with other women.

Discussing Life After Forty

Hello,

I am a woman in my forties and find that life has changed significantly for me. I wanted to start this blog to discuss life's changes after forty. Not just sticking to the norm but investigating all that takes place within our psyche and bodies after forty. I would love to hear from men as well on their take of women who are over forty. All topics are welcome as long as we agree to be respectful to one another.

So since I am starting this blog I will start by telling about my personal experiences thus far about being forty something. I am setting up the posts separately so the topic of each can be discussed and easily found.

Look forward to hearing and sharing with you~
